After working in Councilman John Liu’s office as a district administrator, Ellen Young is hoping to start her own political career as an Assemblywoman.
Young received the Queens County Democratic Organization’s backing to run for the position that will be left open when Jimmy Meng ends his current term.
Currently, Young is a District Leader in Flushing and has also been volunteering in the community for more than 20 years. Some of the positions that Young has held include president of the Chinese American Voters Association, president of the Friends of Queens Library, executive director of the Flushing Chinese Business Association and vice president of the Central Queens Regular Democratic Club.
Young, an immigrant from Taiwan, is also a former auxiliary police officer and still works as an NYPD “block watcher.”
Young said that the state of the education system needs to be improved, which includes making sure that the state is giving New York City the proper amount of funding.
“The importance of education is the foundation of our society and the pillar for law and order,” Young said. “Our schools have not been getting our fair share of funding. We have a moral obligation to improve our schools. We’re being short changed.”
In addition, Young said, health care needs to be made more accessible for seniors so that they are not forced to chose between buying their medications or paying their rent.
“We must honor and respect our elders by extending state programs,” she said.
Finally, Young said that improvements need to be made in the area of neighborhood safety. She would like to eliminate the statute of limitations for rape and see a master DNA database created.
“I’m sure it will benefit our entire community if I get elected,” Young said. “I’m going to try very hard to get each voter’s support. I’ll make my case to each voter and I’ll make my case to Albany.”
