New Amber Alert stamp unveiled

The United States Postal Service chose St. Mary's Hospital for Children, of Bayside, to dedicate their new AMBER Alert Postage Stamp.
The stamp was unveiled in the Hospital's Children's Activity Center, on Wednesday, July 26, because St. Mary's has been committed to the safety of children since 1950.
The AMBER Alert System began in 1996 as a response to the kidnapping and brutal murder of 9-year-old, Texan resident, Amber Hagerman. AMBER stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response and helps coordinate the efforts of broadcasters, local police, and state transportation officials in order to help find abducted children. Although the program began in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the U.S. Department of Justice has extended AMBER across all 50 states.
The U.S. Postal Service is continuing its tradition of drawing attention to important social causes by issuing the AMBER Alert stamp. They hope that the stamp can inform citizens of the program.
Since its relocation to Bayside in 1950, St. Mary's Hospital successfully serves over 4,000 children a year and is interested in affording them a safe environment, not just clinical care.
&#8220St. Mary's is proud to heighten public awareness of the AMBER Alert System. Their program works to return children to their homes. Like AMBER, we are dedicated to taking care of children and their families and provide them with services within their homes,” said Burt Grebin, MD, President and CEO of St. Mary's Healthcare System for Children.
Guests at the Stamp Dedication included a representative from Congressmember Gary Ackerman's office, Senator Frank Padavan, and several members of the U.S. Postal Service, including Flushing's Postmaster, William Rogers.
Nationwide AMBER Alert Programs have helped save more than 265 children. Case studies have shown that some perpetrators release the abducted child after hearing the AMBER Alert on the radio or seeing it on television.
&#8220We are delighted that the AMBER Alert Stamp is being unveiled at St. Mary's Hospital. What better place than here?” stated Senator Padavan.
