Queens merchants raise money to fight cancer

This year, from July 31 to September 5, Queens Burger King locations will be joined again by several of the borough's Modell's Sporting Goods stores in an effort to raise $1.2 million for the Jimmy Fund - which supports pediatric care and cancer research.
Adorned with vintage Disney paintings and filled with a staff of caring doctors and nurses, the Jimmy Fund Clinic assures that a patient's psychological, family, spiritual, and medical needs are constantly achieved.
In the beginning, the Boston Braves baseball team and the Variety Club of New England joined forces to help a local 12-year-old cancer patient dubbed &#8220Jimmy.” On a national broadcast, millions listened as the boy met with his heroes from the Braves and contributions began to pour in from the public.
Since its creation in 1948, the Jimmy Fund Clinic, part of Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has served as the world's premier center for pediatric cancer research and treatment.
Customers at local Burger King restaurants will be urged to donate $1 to the Jimmy Fund in the restaurants' &#8220A Chance for Kids” program. Participating restaurants extend across several states including New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Ohio, and New York.
Burger King locations have been dedicated to this fundraising program since 2000. Modell's stores are in their second year of participation. Last year Modell's and Burger King helped raise $1 million for the program.
Known as &#8220Small Fries,” by the Burger King corporation, &#8220A Chance for Kids” will assist in the funding for important cancer research for children around the world. In return for their contributions, customers will receive prizes including Burger King products with the value of $1 or more, Blockbuster movie rentals, or Herrington Gift Teddy Bears.
