Job Fair At York College Draws Community

Councilmember Leroy Comrie, in conjunction with State Senator Malcolm Smith and Assemblymember William Scarborough, sponsored a Job Expo recently at the York College/CUNY.
The community fair gave constituents an opportunity to explore job opportunities with the numerous companies that will be in attendance. Additional sponsors were the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation and NYC Business Solutions.
Participating in the Job Expo were representatives of the following companies: New York City Police Department; New York State Police; New York City Fire Department/EMS; New York City Department of Corrections; Federal Express; New York City Board of Elections; New York Mets; United States Coast Guard; and more.
&#8220I want to thank the York College community and its president, Dr. Marcia Keizs, for facilitating this successful event,” stated Comrie.
&#8220Additionally, I want to extend my appreciation to all the agencies and corporations who chose to participate in and sponsor this expo. As our city continues to strive toward an economic renaissance in the post-9/11 era, it is important that government and business continue to work in partnership together.”
The New York State Department of Labor recently issued a report stating that New York City's unemployment rate had fallen to 4.1% in October, the lowest since comparable employment data collection began in 1976.
The city's unemployment rate, lower than that of the entire nation for the second straight month, is down from 4.5 percent in September, 2006 and 5.8 percent in October, 2005. In the past year, the number of employed New Yorkers increased by 43,700.
&#8220Despite the decreasing unemployment numbers in our city, there continues to an urgent need to create employment opportunities in communities of color throughout this city,” Comrie stated.
&#8220As evidenced by the unexpected turnout of applicants at the recent M&M hiring in Manhattan last week, it is apparent that there are, indeed, thousands of people in our city who are still desperately and actively seeking employment. However, I am encouraged that with the recent groundbreaking of the new baseball stadium in Flushing and several other projects that the Queens' delegation of the City Council is diligently working on, the economic future of Queens looks brighter.”
