When Throggs Neck native Stephen Duffy joined the FDNY eight years ago, he hoped he could make a difference, and perhaps one day even save a life. Last month, Duffy was honored by the department for his life-saving heroics, although his act of bravery took place in a hospital bed, not a burning building.
At an emotionally charged ceremony on January 19, Duffy got the chance to meet the teenage girl whose life he saved three years ago through a bone marrow transplant.
