Enter Our ‘DREAM PROM CONTEST’

As high school students are beginning to get excited for their upcoming proms, The Queens Courier will give one couple the best one possible through the Dream Prom Contest.
The borough’s high schools will be having proms beginning May 4. The later ones are scheduled to take place on June 6 and June 7.
The Queens Courier is asking high school students to e-mail or fax a piece of 150 words or less explaining why they deserve to be the winner of the Dream Prom Contest. Through the contest, which is also being sponsored by Studio Z, Oh So Dressy, A&S Whitestone Nursery, Howard Beach Tuxedo, and Azure Lingerie, the winning couple will receive a prom dress, tuxedo, hair styling, make-up, manicure, corsage, boutonniere and photos.
“I think it’s very important that every girl at this very significant stage in their life should have an opportunity to be able to choose a dress that’s something that will make a very momentous occasion for her that she’ll remember always,” said Jerry Grossfeld, the owner of Oh So Dressy.
One excited student who entered the Dream Prom Contest lost about 50 pounds in anticipation of her upcoming prom. Saying that prior to losing the weight she dressed as a “schlup,” the girl now says that, “I would love some help with my hair and make-up.”
The deadline for entries for the Dream Prom Contest is April 24. They must be e-mailed to mhickey@queenscourier.com or faxed to 718-631-3498.
Additionally, The Queens Courier is also looking for prom photos to publish in the paper and post on our website, qns.com. The photos, which will not be returned, can be mailed to The Queens Courier at 38-15 Bell Boulevard, Bayside, NY 11361 or e-mailed as JPEGs of at least 300 DPI to editorial@queenscourier.com. Please be sure all photos have caption information including first and last names, school prom attended, date and location of prom and a contact phone number.

Prom Safety Tip of the Week
As prom time approaches, safety measures are being promoted to ensure that teens are having a good time while still taking the proper precautions. Assemblymember Michele Titus is asking that people pledge not to drink and drive to or from their prom through a program entitled Arrive Alive.
“Far too often, drunk drivers are the cause of tragic accidents,” Titus said. “Memorable and exciting events like the prom can quickly turn into a tragedy when alcohol is involved.”
Through the Arrive Alive pledge, students promise that they will not drink and drive or take a ride from another person who has been drinking. Also, parents are required to give a ride at any time without asking questions.
“Taking the pledge is simple and it could mean the difference between life and death,” Titus said.
To find out more about Arrive Alive or to get a copy of the pledge, contact Titus’s office, which is located at 1931 Mott Avenue, Room 301, Far Rockaway, or call 718-327-1845.
