WWI Doughboys remembered

City Councilmember Eric Gioia joined local residents, veterans, the Woodside Civic Association (WCA) and community leaders to honor the 13 heroes from Woodside who were killed in The Great War. The soldiers, or “Doughboys,” are now honored with a memorial plaque listing their names at the foot of the statue in Woodside’s Doughboy Park.
The dedication ceremony on Saturday, April 14 included a reading of Woodrow Wilson’s Declaration of War by Ed Bergendahl, President of the WCA and a review of the biographical histories of the fallen soldiers by Catherine Gregory, a Woodside historian. Barbara Coleman, Vice President of the WCA read a poem commemorating the soldiers’ lives.
Gioia worked with the WCA to secure a grant from Citibank to fund the plaque and followed through with the Parks Department. This month marks the 90th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I.
