Tietz reaches out to Chinese community

The Margaret Tietz Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, located in Jamaica, is reaching out to the Chinese-speaking community to let them know what services are available to them.
Among the services provided by Margaret Tietz are long-term care, hospice/palliative care and short-term rehabilitation. They also have an adult day care facility in Flushing that is open seven days a week.
“At Margaret Tietz Center, you will find a spectacular facility with warmth and activity. You will find programs that provide choices and options that meet our residents’ individual needs,” their website states. “You will find the services and quality you’d expect from a facility that has been in the neighborhood for over 35 years. And you will find a highly dedicated staff, which have made MTC the premier facility it is today.”
In order to better serve the community, Margaret Tietz has formed partnerships with organizations such as Hospice of New York and the NYU Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine.
“We’re bringing the best to Queens,” Margaret Tietz Executive Director Gerald Hart said. “We just want to be able to service everyone better.”
John Chermack, the assistant administrator at Hospice of New York, explained that hospice is comprehensive end-of-life care and that its services are provided where the patients want, whether that be a nursing home or their own home.
“Margaret Tietz was our first partner and obviously our most important partner in providing this kind of care,” Chermack said.
Margaret Tietz Director of Public Affairs Linda Spiegel added that they have the only inpatient unit for hospice in Queens.
James Karkenny, the executive director of Continuing Care for the NYU Medical Center, spoke about the partnership with Margaret Tietz and how it enables people to receive a high standard of care without having to leave the borough. This is the second year of the partnership and Karkenny said that he hopes it will continue to be successful.
“Margaret Tietz is the only skilled nursing facility that we work with in Queens,” Karkenny said.
Hart explained some of the ways in which they are specifically helping the Asian community. They have translators available and are currently looking for an additional Chinese-speaking RN. They also have an Asian board that looks at what can be done to better serve the Asian population.
“We’re on hand with our translators at the nursing home and at the day care site to help out to make sure that relationship is a good one and people can come in easily,” Spiegel said.
