School fair is fun for all

In addition to a three-day weekend, students at P.S. 169 had an extra treat this Memorial Day. The children were treated to a carnival on the school grounds - complete with games, food, a dunking tank and inflatable rides.
For over 10 years the school has put on a carnival for the kids - from kindergarten through 5th grade - on the Friday before Memorial Day. The younger children attend in the morning and the older ones attend in the afternoon.
The festival is so popular that parents and students volunteer to help put on the event.
Marc Brandell works at Madison Avenue Pharmacy in Manhattan. He took off work, along with two of his employees, to volunteer.
“Kids love to go to school here,” he said. “It’s just a special thing that the school gives back to the kids.”
Principal Annette Kunin said that the festival used to be a quasi-fundraiser. However with rising costs, now the school just breaks even, but it is still a fun day for the children.
The largest attraction at the carnival was the titanic slide. Kunin climbs the two-story slide every year, much to the thrill of the children.
Assistant Principal Vanessa Rosa joined in the fun, letting the children throw balls in order to dunk her.
“I have never seen anything like this at a school. It is amazing,” said Rosa, right before she got wet.
Brandell said that every year he tries to get some fun new attraction for the carnival.
This year, much to Rosa’s chagrin, it was the dunk tank.
