Colombian Independence month - join the festivities

Get ready, Queens - a month packed full of festivities is coming up and Colombian or not, you can join in.
“Everybody can be an honorary Colombian for the day [at the festivities],” said Assemblymember Jose Peralta, who represents District 39, which is home to many Colombians.
On Thursday, July 10, Peralta announced some of the festivities that will held to celebrate Colombian Independence Day on Sunday, July 20.
“We felt that the Colombian community merits recognition,” Peralta said, explaining that it is comprised of lawyers, business owners and artists, among others, who contribute greatly to the economic and social life of the borough.
One of the celebrations will be a festival on Sunday, July 20 in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. It will feature ethnic food, dances and artwork, said Doris Donado, of the Colombian Civic Center.
Other activities include:

  • Friday, July 18, 9 p.m. - Gala dinner at Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
  • Thursday, July 24, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Business card exchange at Crowne Plaza Hotel, at 104-04 Ditmars Boulevard. Networking event features Latino businesses.
  • Friday, July 25, 9 p.m. - Gala dinner at Crowne Plaza Hotel, at 104-04 Ditmars Boulevard.
  • Sunday, July 27, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Colombian Day Parade on Northern Boulevard, between 69th and 90th Streets.
  • Sunday, July 27, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Festival with local artists and food vendors on Junction Boulevard, between Northern Boulevard and 32nd Avenue.
