LIJ’s Dowling in ‘Healthcare’ top 100 list

Modern Healthcare magazine has named Michael J. Dowling, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, to its national list of “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.”
Dowling was ranked 42 on the annual list, up from 86 last year. Dowling’s ranking was higher than any other hospital executive from New York.
Dowling first joined the North Shore-LIJ Health System in 1995, at which time he was the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He then became the President and Chief Executive Officer in January of 2002.
Prior to coming to the health system, Dowling was with Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield as its Senior Vice President. He also worked for the New York State government for 12 years. Seven of those years were spent as the Governor’s State Director of Health, Education and Human Services and Deputy Secretary. Dowling was also formerly the New York State Department of Social Services Commissioner.
Along with his role with the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Dowling is also the chairman of the National Center for Healthcare Leadership and Healthcare Association of New York State.
Topping Modern Healthcare’s “100 Most Power People in Healthcare” was Revolution Health Group founder, chairman and CEO Steve Case.
The other individuals to make up the top five of the list were Google chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation co-founder Bill Gates, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama also made the list. Current United States President George W. Bush was ranked eighth. Republican presidential candidate John McCain also made the list, coming in at number nine.
Four other executives from New York State made the list. They are Karen Davis, President of Commonwealth Fund at 58; Dennis Rivera, Chairman of SEIU Healthcare at 79; David Shulkin, President and CEO of Beth Israel Medical Center at 86; and Kenneth Raske, the President of the Greater New York Hospital Association at 98.
