DA: man convicted in shooting death over woman

A Jamaica resident has been convicted in the shooting death of a 25-year-old man two years ago after an argument over a young woman.
“An argument between two men over a young woman ended with one of them being senselessly shot twice — once in the face at point-blank range,”said District Attorney Richard A. Brown. “The cold-blooded actions of the defendant warrants the imposition of a lengthy sentence behind bars to punish him and protect society.”
The district attorney identified the defendant as Luke Dawkins, 30, of 168-20 88th Street in Jamaica. Dawkins was convicted of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon following a two-week non-jury trial before Queens Supreme Court Justice Arthur J. Cooperman. The defendant faces 25 years to life in prison when sentenced on October 23.
According to the trial testimony, on September 18, 2006 at about 5 a.m. inside of 168-20 88th Avenue, Dawkins and the victim, Anton Green, 25, got into a heated argument about the victim’s female friend. Following the argument, the victim returned to his room on the second floor.
Around the same time, Dawkins retrieved a loaded firearm from his basement apartment, went upstairs to Green’s apartment, and, once Green came out into the hall, shot him once in the face. With Green laying on the floor, Dawkins stood over him and shot him a second time in the head.
