Flushing BID holding preparedness seminar

“Emergency preparedness” means different things to different people - hurricanes to people in Louisiana and Florida, tornadoes in the Midwest and terrorism to most New Yorkers.
In response to a devastating fire on October 28, that forced the emergency demolition of buildings on Roosevelt Avenue near Main Street, the Flushing Business Improvement District (BID) and the city’s Department of Small Business Services (SBS) have announced a free emergency readiness seminar for area businesses.
The seminar will be on Thursday, January 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel at 136-40 Roosevelt Avenue, not far from the ravaged fire site in the heart of downtown Flushing.
According to Mabel Law, Executive Director of the Flushing BID, “We want to make sure that all of our businesses are ready and prepared in case of an emergency.” Law pointed out that much of the follow-up assistance provided for the affected businesses after the blaze was related to preparedness.
Peter Koo of the Flushing Chinese Business Association observed, “We can’t control unforeseeable circumstances, but what responsible business owners can do is make sure their businesses are best prepared.”
At the announcement of the upcoming seminar, Law and Koo also discussed the progress made in assisting businesses with their insurance, relocation and financial needs. The groups have arraigned for additional free legal advice for the affected businesses and presented the owners a small grant check for short-term expenses.
