Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown is now the longest-serving DA in Queens history, having surpassed the record set by Benjamin W. Downing, who served for 6,873 days in the late 1800s.
Brown was appointed on June 1, 1991, by then-Governor Mario M. Cuomo and elected to a full four-year term that November. He was re-elected in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007.
He had served as a judge since September of 1973, rising to become an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division before accepting the position of Queens DA. This year marks his 50th in public service.
Under the leadership of “Judge Brown,” as he is affectionately known, the Queens DA’s Office has attained an extraordinary reputation as one of the finest prosecutors’ offices in New York State.
“As proud as I am on a personal and professional level, this historic achievement could not have been possible without the overwhelming support and confidence of the people of Queens County who have continually elected me as their chief law enforcement officer since 1991,” he said.
