A well-grounded education

This year, Earth Day was celebrated for the 20th time, and these first graders from P.S. 46, the Alley Pond School, in Bayside got into the act, beautifying the grounds of their school and improving the environment by planting Azaleas.

They were assisted by students, faculty and staff from Queensborough Community College (QCC) on Thursday, on April 22, as part of their Earth Day activities, which celebrated both service learning and the college’s 50th anniversary, with sponsorship by Con Edison, National Grid, American Association of Community Colleges, Broadening Horizons, and Learn and Serve.

In addition to supplying the perennials, QCC provided information on Earth Day and seed packets for the kids to take home and plant.

Shown here, P.S. 46 Assistant Principal Stamo Karalazarides (left) and first grade teacher Alisa Schwartz observe as a team of budding gardeners, including Tyler Shaw and Priscillie Chu, get their Azalea snugly in the ground.

With any luck, the school will be graced with bright buds for many Earth Days to come.
