Auto thefts on the rise

106th Precinct

Precinct-wide, there were 10 more auto thefts in the last 28 days, as compared to the previous 28 days. Year-to-date, there have been 13 more, according to 106th Precinct Commanding Officer, Deputy Inspector Joseph G. Courtesis.
The problem area, he said, is north of the North Conduit, south of Rockaway Boulevard, and from the Van Wyck Expressway to 125th Street. And the week of May 10, five cars were stolen in Tudor Village.
Stolen cars are actually being recovered in these areas, said Courtesis.
The thieves, he said, are targeting 2008 to 2010 vehicles, especially Toyotas.
In response, said Courtesis, the borough has recognized the spike, and has authorized overtime for enforcement.
“We will see an increase in cop activity,”?he said, with 24 additional officers on overtime three days a week.
