Nyema Brown, a high school intern assistant at the Learning Garden at Liberty Park in Jamaica, spent last summer mastering gardening skills, including weeding and planting, and teaching these techniques to children. She assisted with class lessons and helped to clean up the garden.
“Working at the Queens Learning Garden brought me many wonderful experiences and taught me lessons that I can take with me forever,”?she said.
City Parks Foundation’s (CPF) Learning Gardens takes over abandoned community gardens in low-income areas and turns them into vibrant learning centers for the whole community. Close to 3,000 children, parents, teachers and community members join forces to learn, play and plant their own Learning Gardens. Free classes, workshops and events take place at CPF Learning Gardens at Liberty Park in Jamaica, Grove Hill Community Playground in the South Bronx, and Umoja Community Garden in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
