Grant for Noguchi

The Noguchi Museum got a special gift for its 25th anniversary – a $30,000 federal grant secured by Congressmember Carolyn Maloney.

“Isamu Noguchi was a pioneer in so many ways – not just in the wonderful works of art displayed here in the museum, or his iconic designs that have enlivened homes all over the world – but also in his dedication to Long Island City,” Maloney said. “It’s a pleasure to celebrate The Noguchi Museum’s 25th anniversary and at the same time announce funding I helped secure in Congress to further the museum’s mission.”

Maloney helped present the check to Noguchi Museum Director Jenny Dixon and Museum Chair David Holbrook during a ceremony on Saturday, May 15. As part of the museum’s anniversary celebration, the museum offered free admission and special activities including discussions of specific works of art, classes for teens and hands-on projects for visitors.

The funding, which was approved by Congress in 2009, will allow the museum to conduct a survey of its entire holdings: 378 works in the Museum’s Permanent Collection, nearly 2,900 other objects of art and archives containing over 50 linear feet of paper and over 10,000 photographic images.

In addition, the grant will also support the creation of the museum’s first strategic, long-range conservation plan, and will help the museum care for and maintain its holdings and ensure the long-term stability of Isamu Noguchi’s body of work.

“The Noguchi Museum is deeply grateful to Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney for helping to ensure the long-term stability and care of the Museum and its holdings,” said Museum Director Jenny Dixon. “Her support demonstrates a deep understanding of the vital importance of the arts to New York City, including the Queens community.”
