No-cost mammograms

FOREST HILLS – Senator Joseph Addabbo is again cosponsoring, along with The American-Italian Cancer Foundation’s Mobile Mammography Program, no-cost mammograms. Women ages 40 and older who have a New York City mailing address and have had no mammogram in the past 12 months are invited to have a free mammogram in Forest Hills on Monday, September 27.

No walk-ins are allowed; an appointment is necessary by calling 800-453-8378, Ext. 1. Look for the Mobile Mammography Van parked at Community Board 6, between 9 a.m. and noon at 73-05 Yellowstone Boulevard in Forest Hills.

“We know that early detection of breast cancer can save lives,” said Addabbo. “I worked with the American-Italian Cancer Foundation to bring back their Mammogram Van to my district, offering free, vital health care services for insured women ages 40 and older and uninsured women ages 50 and older with no health insurance.”

For these women, explained the senator, services will be paid by the Screening Partnerships of the New York State Cancer Services Program (CSP) or through generous contributions by the American-Italian Cancer Foundation’s donors. For women with health insurance, their insurance carriers will be billed for services. However, even insured women will not be charged a co-payment and will not receive a bill.

For more details about the NYS CSP, call 866-442-CANCER (2262).

In addition to a mammogram performed by a certified, licensed mammography technologist, professional medical services from Multi-Diagnostic Services, Inc. (MDS) will include:

? Clinical breast exam and instruction in breast self-exam by a trained professional

? Radiological interpretations performed by Board Certified Radiologists

? Results will be sent to each woman and/or her doctor within 10 business days

? If MDS has previous mammogram films, a comparison radiological study will be done, which in some cases can eliminate the need for additional testing.

On the day of the Mammogram Van visit, women are urged to wear a two-piece suit; do not use any oil, powder, deodorant or perfume in the breast, underarm or chest area; women with Medicare, Medicaid, or other health insurance must bring their membership card.

Once the equipment is accepted, all hazardous components (batteries on circuit boards and portable equipment, mercury switches, toxic capacitors, fluorescent lamps, leaded glass from monitors, etc.) will be extracted prior to destruction.
