MASPETH — A Maspeth resident was arraigned Aug. 30 on charges of vehicular assault, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a crime, reckless driving and reckless endangerment, the Queens district attorney’s office reported.
An eyewitness reported to an officer of the 104th Precinct that Daniel Freebes, 52, allegedly stuck a male on a motorcycle while driving his Chevrolet at the intersection of 60th Street and 56th Drive in Maspeth around 12:05 a.m. Aug. 29, the DA said.
Upon being struck, the man was thrown from the motorcycle, suffering bruises, bleeding, swelling, lacerations on his face and body, fractures in his ankle and foot and other injuries requiring knee surgery, the DA said. He was taken to an unnamed hospital for treatment, the DA said.
After hitting the man, Freebes allegedly attempted to flee, the DA said. The officer later found him on 61st Street and Grand Avenue in Maspeth, with watery eyes, slurred speech, his breath smelling of alcohol and an unsteady step, the DA said. Freebes admitted to drinking before driving and was taken to the 112th Precinct, the DA’s office said. A Breathalyzer test taken there revealed Freebes had a blood alcohol count of .198, the DA said.
Freebes has been held on bail of $5,000 and his next court date is Sept. 13, the DA said.
