Collision at Aqueduct injures 2, kills horse

SOUTH OZONE PARK — A horse was left dead and two jockeys were injured in a major spill during a race at the Aqueduct Race Track Saturday, according to the New York Racing Association.

Ryan and Jack, a 4-year-old gelding, suffered a skull fracture and had to be euthanized after he stumbled and fell on the far turn on the track, causing jockey Jason Garcia, 28, to land on the turf. October Dreams, a 3-year-old gelding, collided with Ryan and Jack while he was still on the ground, unseating October Dreams’ jockey, Jose Bermudez, 41.

Garcia was listed in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Jamaica Hospital Sunday after suffering broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and a hairline fracture of his neck, according to his agent, Jorge Velasquez.

Bermudez was released Sunday from North Shore Medical Center with bruised ribs, and he expected to be sidelined at least one week.
