CORONA — A carjacking suspect is in stable condition at Elmhurst Hospital after he was shot by police in Corona, police said.

Around 1:07 p.m. Jan. 19, an 89-year-old man was sitting inside his 1992 Oldsmobile parked opposite 102-14 Christie Ave. in Corona when the suspect, a 46-year-old Hispanic man, approached him and announced a carjacking, police said.

The suspect then pistol-whipped the man in the arm, police said, and the victim was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital in Flushing in stable condition.

As two witnesses came to aid the man, the suspect fled on foot, police said.

A description of the suspect was given to police when plain-clothed officers riding in an unmarked vehicle saw the suspect, police said.

After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect ran into a nearby driveway, police said.

Officers ordered the suspect to drop his weapon when the suspect turned toward the officers, leading to one of the officers firing a round into the suspect’s lower left torso, police said.

The suspect was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, police said.

A BB gun powered by a CO2 cartridge and painted black was recovered at the scene, police said.

The investigation was still ongoing and charges against the man were pending, police said.
