F. Hills Special Education Pupils May Be Transferred to Jamaica

Plan To Move District 75 Students To New Facility

The Department of Education (DOE) proposes to move a group of special education students from their current Forest Hills location to a brand new Jamaica space starting in September, according to an agency press release.

Currently, P009, a District 75 school which serves students classified as Emotionally Disturbed (“ED”) or Intellectually Disabled (“ID”), is spread among six sites in Queens, one of which is at 112-15 71st Rd. in Forest Hills.

The DOE’s proposal is to move 60 of those students to 153-27 88th Ave. in Jamaica, a brand new build- ing set to open in time for the 2012- 13 school year.

The new site will also hold P.S. 182, a zoned elementary school whose 817-student population is currently also spread among three Jamaica sites while the new building is being constructed. The Panel for Educational Policy already approved the consolidation of those classes last year. P.S. 182 will continue to use a nearby annex as well.

The new building includes space designed specifically for the District 75 students.

If this proposal is approved by the Panel for Educational Policy, P009 will co-located with P.S. 182 beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. The combined enrollment will be approximately 940-995 students, yielding a building utilization rate of 105-111 percent.

The Educational Impact Statement (EIS) of the proposal can be found on the Department of Education’s website at https://schools.nyc.gov/AboutUs/leadership/ PEP/ publicnotice/ 2011- 2012/ Mar212012Proposals. htm. Copies of the EIS are also available in P.S. 182’s main offices.

Written comments can be sent to D28Proposals@ schools. nyc. gov. Oral comments can be left by calling 1-212-374-7621.

A hearing on the proposal will take place at P009’s Forest Hills location. Speaker sign-up will begin 30 minutes before the hearing and will close 15 minutes after the start.

The Panel for Educational Policy will vote on the proposed item at its Mar. 21 meeting at The High School of Fashion Industries, located at 225 West 24th St. in Manhattan.
