State Makes a Mint by Selling Surplus Vehicles

Over $1.6M Generated In Auction

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the Office of General Services (OGS) eBay sale received final bids totaling $1,648,074 for 454 state vehicles for sale on eBay.

The sale began on Apr. 3 and concluded last Friday, Apr. 13, at 8 a.m. More than 15,000 bids were received on the vehicles.

In February, Cuomo announced a vehicle fleet reduction initiative that will permanently decrease the number of passenger cars and light-duty trucks being utilized by state agencies, which stood at approximately 4,700 prior to the sale.

As part of an overall effort to shed surplus items, the state created NYSStore.com to link consumers to available state surplus. This includes vehicles and other items, as well as real estate available through eBay and other means. To date, more than 60,000 visitors have been to www.NYSStore.com.

“By selling unneeded equipment and supplies, New York State continues to reduce its operating costs and generate millions in new revenue for the state without raising taxes,” Cuomo said. “This initiative is a just one part of our work to overhaul government operations and make the state work more efficiently for the taxpayer.”

“Governor Cuomo is committed to reducing the cost of government operations and is using numerous strategies to do so, including the implementation of strategic sourcing, the establishment of Business Service Centers, and the Real Estate Optimization initiative,” Commissioner of the Office of General Services RoAnn M. Destito added. “We are extremely pleased with the success of the eBay sale and the popularity of NYSStore.com because we are able to broaden our reach to potential purchasers throughout New York State and further.”

The highest priced item was a 2008 Toyota Highlander that went for $15,700; and a 1968 Ford F-262 pick-up garnered a bid of $3,750. Vehicle pick-up information was provided to winning bidders at the conclusion of the sale. The Department of Motor Vehicles provided onsite registration and license plates for the vehicles during pick-up.
