Rep. Joseph Crowley honored Queens native and renowned singer/songwriter Melanie Safka before her performance at the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers annual “We Write the Songs” event last Tuesday, May 15. As noted, Safka grew up in Astoria, performed at the 1969 Woodstock Festival and wrote and sang a number of chart-topping songs, including “What Have They Done To My Song Ma,” “Brand New Key” and “Candles in the Rain.”
