Bandits Rob, Knife Bicyclist

Perps Sought In ‘Horrific’ Flushing Meadows Attack

Going on a bike ride through Flushing Meadows-Corona Park turned into a nightmarish journey for a 39-year-old man who was knifed in the back and critically injured by an unknown group of assailants last Saturday afternoon, Mar. 9, it was reported.

The victim was rushed by paramedics to New York Hospital Queens in Flushing in serious but stable condition.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 5:50 p.m. last Saturday near Meadow Lake, as the victim was riding a bicycle around the body of water.

Reportedly, he was approached by a group of eight to 10 Hispanic males believed to be between 18 and 20 years of age. Law enforcement sources said the group stopped the bicyclist and asked him to hand over his ride.

When he refused, it was reported, the group attacked the man, with one of the assailants stabbing him multiple times in the neck and back. The suspects then took the bike and reportedly fled westbound on the footbridge over the Grand Central Parkway into Forest Hills.

Officers from the 110th Precinct and EMS units responded to 911 calls of the attack and came to the victim’s aid.

According to City Council Member Julissa Ferreras, police have “ruled out any gang activity.” She noted in a statement sent to the Times Newsweekly on Monday, Mar. 11, that the 110th Precinct has beefed up patrols in and around Flushing Meadows since last Saturday’s incident.

“While I applaud the officers of the 110th Precinct for increasing patrols within Flushing Meadows Corona Park in light of this horrific crime, it is my hope that the NYPD will continue to heighten the number of their routine patrols conducted in the park year-round,” the Council member added. “Our park needs to be safe for our families and all the people of Queens, and appalling behavior of this nature will not be tolerated.”

An investigation by the 110th Precinct Detective Squad is ongoing, police said.

Anyone with any information regarding the stabbing that could prove helpful is asked to call the 110th Precinct Detective Squad at 1-718- 476-9303; all calls will be kept strictly confidential.
