Following months of repairs to fix the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Broad Channel branch of the Queens Borough Public Library celebrated its grand reopening last Wednesday, Mar. 6, with an event attended by a bevy of elected officials. As noted, the library suffered close to $1 million in damage and lost more than 16,000 books and other materials as a result of the storm surge that hit the branch during the superstorm that struck the area last October. Extensive repairs were made to the interior of the branch, and some of the books were replaced through a donation provided by Scholastic. Among those on hand for the occasion were Department of Design and Construction Commissioner David Burney, City Council Members Eric Ulrich, Jimmy Van Bramer and Vincent Gentile and Queens Borough President Helen Marshall. Students from P.S. 47 and representatives of Rep. Gregory Meeks, State Sen. Joseph Addabbo and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder also participated.
