New Asphalt Coming to Numerous Local Streets

Spring/Summer Paving In Board 5 Area

Smoother streets are set to take shape in Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village as the city Department of Transportation (DOT) has tentatively scheduled roadway resurfacing in all four neighborhoods in the coming weeks.

Community Board 5 District Manager Gary Giordano told the Times Newsweekly that DOT crews will soon hit a number of streets within its confines to strip off existing pavement (a process known as milling) and replace it soon thereafter with a new layer of asphalt.

According to the tentative list of streets to be repaved, the work is scheduled to begin on or about June. However, the Times Newsweekly observed DOT crews beginning milling work on one roadway on the list- 69th Street between Eliot and Metropolitan avenues in Middle Village-on Tuesday morning, May 14.

The DOT will post notices on street lights and telephone poles in advance of impending work. All scheduled resurfacing on the list below will take place during daytime hours. Dates for resurfacing, as scheduled, are weather permitting; check the DOT’s website, www.nyc.gov/dot, or call 311 for updates.

The tentative resurfacing list for the Board 5 area is as follows:

– 57th Avenue between 74th and 80th streets in Maspeth/Elmhurst;

– 58th Avenue between 74th and 75th streets in Middle Village;

– 59th Drive between Fresh Pond Road and 64th Street in Maspeth;

– 60th Avenue between 59th Place and Fresh Pond Road-and between Mount Olivet Crescent and 65th Street-in Maspeth;

– 60th Road between Fresh Pond Road and 65th Street in Maspeth;

– 66th Street between 60th Avenue and 60th Road in Maspeth;

– 69th Street between Eliot and Metropolitan avenues in Middle Village;

– 75th Street between Caldwell Avenue and the Queens Midtown Expressway in Middle Village;

– 77th Road between 79th Place and 80th Street in Glendale;

– 77th Avenue between 76th and 88th streets in Glendale;

– 79th Avenue between 87th Street and Woodhaven Boulevard in Glendale;

– 79th Place between 78th Avenue and the dead end in Glendale;

– 81st Road between Myrtle Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard in Glendale;

– 84th Street between 77th and Myrtle avenues in Glendale;

– 86th Street between 77th Avenue and Union Turnpike in Glendale;

– 87th Street between 77th Avenue and Union Turnpike in Glendale;

– Gates Avenue between Traffic Avenue and Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood;

– Menahan Street between Traffic Avenue and Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood;

– Mount Olivet Crescent between 59th Drive and Eliot Avenue in Maspeth;

– Traffic Avenue between Woodbine and Menahan streets in Ridgewood; and

– Woodbine Street between Traffic Avenue and Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood.

The plans also include the installation of speed bumps on 78th Avenue between 73rd Place and 80th Street and 84th Street between 77th and Myrtle avenues, both in Glendale .

Any vehicle found to be parked on the roadway during scheduled resurfacing hours can and will be towed away at the owner’s expense. Additionally, only sections of these roads will be closed to vehicular during resurfacing activities; all other portions will remain open.
