Police found the body of missing 58-year-old Rego Park woman inside of a lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on Saturday morning, and her son has been charged with her murder, authorities said.
According to police, officers pulled Lyubov Gorbunova’s body out of Willow Lake at about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. Her son, Roman Gorbunov, 21, admitted to allegedly dumping the body into the lake after murdering her on Sept. 27.
The mother and son got into a verbal argument that turned violent when Roman allegedly beat his mother to death with a piece of furniture, cops said. He then proceeded to put his mother’s body in a body bag and stuff the bag into a garbage can.
The next day, Roman Gorbunov ordered an Uber cab and took it — with the garbage can in tow — to Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The cab driver alerted police to the suspicious fare, but the son was gone before police arrived.
Lyubov Gorbunova, a native of Uzbekistan, was reported missing a week later, on Oct. 4. Police began searching for the son, and found him shortly after midnight on Thursday, Oct. 6, after he was seen trying to steal a security surveillance computer from his apartment, law enforcement agents said.
He then confessed to killing his mother and brought police to the lake where he dumped the body, sources said.
Gorbunov has been charged with murder, concealment of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon, police confirmed.
