Girl Scouts across the borough are getting excited as the Girl Scouts of Greater New York (GSGNY) kicks off the new cookie selling season.
This cookie selling season is especially important because 2017 marks one hundred years of selling Girl Scout cookies!
One scout in particular, 10-year old Madison Hernandez of Elmhurst, has big goals for the next cookie season: she wants to sell 2,017 boxes herself.
“I’ve been selling cookies for three years and one thing that I’ve learned from selling cookies is that advertisement is key,” said Madison. “The better advertisement you have, the more cookies you sell.”
Madison is a member of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s brand new Cookie Executive Committee. Launched this year, the committee is made up of girls who have sold over 500 boxes of cookies each. They meet regularly to discuss marketing tactics lessons learned from selling cookies and tactics to mentor other girls. They are also able to provide feedback about the cookie program to make sure that it remains an effective tool for learning.
“For one hundred years, Girl Scouts have gained life-long personal and business skills, and confidence in their abilities, through the tradition of selling cookies,” said GSGNY CEO Barbara Murphy-Warrington.
To celebrate one hundred years of selling cookies, the Girl Scouts are releasing a commemorative Girl Scouts S’mores cookie to recognize the Girl Scout’s history of getting girls to be outdoors. This new sweet treat will be a crunchy graham cracker sandwich cookie with chocolate and marshmallow filling and will be available to the public on Jan. 3, 2017.
