More than 1,200 first-year students gathered with their families at St. John’s University’s Student Move-In Day at its Hillcrest campus on Saturday, Aug. 26. The new “Johnnies” come from 121 countries, some as far away as Australia and Zimbabwe, to join fellow students from 46 U.S. states in moving into the Residence Village.
More than 2,600 students in total moved into residence halls over the weekend with the help of SJU move-in crews and they were welcomed to the campus by St. John’s president Rev. Brian Shanley as the school prepares for its 154th academic year that got underway on Aug. 30.
Included in the Fall 2023 incoming class is the second class of nursing students after SJU re-established its Bachelor of Science degree program in nursing as part of s significant long-term investment in the health sciences. The program will be housed in the new $106 million St. Vincent Health Sciences Center, scheduled to open next fall.
The incoming class is 53% female and 47% male according to a student profile that also reveals that 67% are either Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, American Indian, Alaska Native or two or more races.

SJU offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs, including 16 doctoral programs. In addition to its main campus in Queens, St. John’s also has campuses and locations on Staten Island and Manhattan, in Rome, Italy, and in Paris, France.
