Time Capsule 3 to Mark the Millennium

On Sept. 23 1938 at the exact moment of the Autumnal Equinox of that year, as an ancient Chinese bell sounded in the background, a torpedo-like gleaming cylinder was solemnly lowered 50 feet below the ground of Flushing Meadows. It was the Time Capsule, the  most sophisticated and elaborate ever made, containing objects and information on civilization up to that time and built to withstand 5,000 years so the peoples of 6939 A.D. would have a record of life on earth. It contained messages to the future from leading figures of its time, including Albert Einstein.
Records of its location were sent to safe repositories around the world. In 1965 at the second World’s Fair, another Time Capsule was buried alongside the original one to update the enormous changes that occurred in the 25 years between capsules.
Now to commemorate the end of the 20th century and the start of the new millennium, a new Time Capsule will be buried near the other two in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The Queens Courier and Con Edison, in cooperation with the New York City Parks Dept. are preparing the project which is part of a citywide millennium celebration.
