Back in its heyday in the 1970s, Montibeller Park was one of the top parks in the city for summer basketball.
The Springfield Gardens asphalt saw the likes of future pro players Anthony Mason and Mark Jackson, as well as former Queens College head coach Norm Roberts, play in a variety of tournaments that ran throughout the day, every day all summer long.
But then the top tournaments went to city parks more centrally located in the other boroughs to save on transportation fees and Montibeller Park was devoid of top flight basketball.
