A 30-year-old Ozone Park man was convicted of charges of murdering his estranged wife’s lover after forcing his way into her apartment in the middle of the night in June 1994, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Scott Young of 124-46 135th Place in Ozone Park was convicted after a 2-1/2-week jury trial before State Supreme Court Justice Timothy Flaherty, the D.A. said.
Testimony at the trial revealed that at about 1:35 a.m. on June 12, 1994 Young went to his estranged wife’s apartment and knocked on the door. His wife answered but refused to let him in, at which point he kicked in the door.
Young then went into the bedroom where he found 28-year-old Kevin Ward lying in the bed, witnesses testified. Young shot Ward five times in a jealous rage, the DA’s office contended. He then turned the gun on his wife, but the gun jammed, allowing her to flee the apartment by jumping from a second-floor window, said Mary de Bourbon, a spokeswoman for the DA.
Young fled the state and was located three years later on July 1, 1997 in a federal prison in Virginia, where he was serving a 39- month sentence for possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.
Flaherty will sentence the defendant on April 6 when he will face a maximum of 25 years to life in prison for the murder conviction.
