Port Authority to Soundproof Two Queens Schools

Well over 300,000 youngsters attend Queens schools that lie in the paths of nearly 2,000 planes per day flying to and from the JFK and LaGuardia airports. These trips average over one plane per minute, and more than 750,000 planes a year.
Port Authority Chairman Lewis M. Eisenberg said that since 1983, $18.8 million has already been spent to soundproof 17 schools in Queens.
The unique construction program calls for the installation of soundproofed windows, ceilings, and doors, as well as special mechanical ventilation systems. In addition to noise reduction, the program also includes such ancillary benefits as lower energy costs and improved appearance, through the installation of new ventilation units and special acoustical windows.
The Federal Aviation Authority contributes 80 percent of the cost, while the PA pays the balance and administers the program.
Utilization of this unique equipment normally results in at least a 50 percent reduction of classroom noise levels attributable to aircrafts.
Applications for inclusion in the PAs soundproofing program is limited to schools located in JFK and LaGuardia airports flight paths. Inquiries should be sent to: Aviation Department, Port Authority NY and NJ, 1
