Already having a flare for the dramatic, sophomore Jeremy Winter provided what could be the biggest hit of the season for the St. John’s baseball team Monday when his two-run single in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Red Storm to a 8-6 victory over the Boston College Eagles at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
The win spanned a four-game Big East losing streak for St. John’s (23-19, 10-10), which is in sixth place and one and a half games out of fourth place.
“It was a big win for us,” said St. John’s coach Ed Blankmeyer. “They gave it up in the ninth, but I give them a lot of credit for coming right back.”
Senior pitcher Brian Dorsey, who retired 12 of 13 batters at one point, entered the bottom of the ninth with a 6-2 lead, but gave up a three-run home run to Brian Durkin to cut the Red Storm’s lead to one.
Junior Mike Tamulionis relieved Dorsey and struck out two before walking Vinny Scavone and giving up a single to Ryan Morgan, which put runners on the corners.
Neal McCarthy tied the game for Boston College (24-16, 13-6) with a single down the right-field line. Tamulionis improved to 1-1 with the win and struck out two in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Jason Kane was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, Anthony DeRosa was 2-for-5 and Charlie Bilezikjian was 1-for-3 with three runs scored for St. John’s, who return to conference action May 11 against Seton Hall at The Ballpark at St. John’s.
Boston College 4, St. John’s 3. The Eagles rallied from a 3-1 deficit to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday.
BC starter Chris Lambert, who retired the side in order in the seventh, improved to 8-0.
Boston College 8, St. John’s 2. The Eagles pounded out eight runs on 16 hits in the nightcap to sweep the doubleheader. Greg Holmes fell to 5-3, allowing six runs on 14 hits in seven innings.
Queens College 5, Philadelphia University 3. Led by Stewart Goodwin, who was 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Jason Lessa, who was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, including his second home run of the year, the Knights (7-22, 7-15 New York Collegiate Athletic Conference) scored three times in the top of the first inning en route to the 5-3 win in the opener of a doubleheader in Philadelphia Saturday.
Keith Haack struck out seven and allowed three earns runs to improve to 2-5 on the year.
Queens College 8, Philadelphia University 3. Stewart Goodwin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored and belted his seventh home run of the year and Nick Gulotta was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI and pitcher Lou Welsh allowed three earned runs on five hits and struck out four for his first win of the year in the nightcap.
Queens College commitments
Fresh off its second straight Division II NCAA apperance and its first New York Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament crown, the Queens College men’s basketball team signed Shaun Bertin, a 6-foot-6 forward from Nazareth High School in Brooklyn.
Bertin, a four-year starter for the Kingsmen, averaged 17.7 points, including a season-high 35 points against Bishop Ford, was named to the CHSAA Division II-South first team.
The women’s basketball team, coached by Jerry Ingenito, signed a pair of standouts from Long Island. To fill the void left by point guard Natasha Lyons, who is transferring out of Queens due to personal reasons, the Lady Knights inked 5-foot-5 Patti Cronin from East Islip.
Cronin, who was named first-team All-Long Island by Newsday, averaged 17.2 points, seven rebounds, 5.1 steals and four assists this season and scored a school-record 1,260 points for coach Mike Petre.
Also heading to Queens in the fall is 5-foot-10 Jackie Plante from Connetquot High School. Plante, who will be a small forward for the Lady Knights, is coming off a knee injury that sidelined her for much of the season.
Uter heads to Broward Community College
Springfield Gardens standout Adrian Uter, who was named to the TimesLedger All-Queens second team last week, will play for Queens native Bob Starkman at Broward Community College in the fall.
Uter, a 6-foot-5 forward, was seventh in the city averaging 15.2 rebounds and also scored 14.3 points per game for Mike Aiken at Springfield Gardens.
Uter joins former Holy Cross standout Joe Marino at Broward.
Laureano garners CUNY honors
Former Bryant softball standout Nathalie Laureano was named CUNY Rookie of the Week after the Baruch freshman second baseman went 4-for-5 with two home runs, four runs scored and four RBIs in a 27-12 win over Brooklyn.
The Queens native is batting .454 with 20 RBIs and 21 runs scored for the Stateswomen.
Softball
Queens College 6, Mercy College 0. Stephanie Santora scattered three hits and struck out eight and Kathy Blake was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Lady Knights (23-16, 13-9 NYCAC) in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday.
Queens College 9, Mercy College 0. Diana DiGilio tossed her first no-hitter, striking out eight in the nightcap. Crystal Wilson was 2-for-4 with four RBIs for Queens, which broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
