Queens-Manhattan Ferry Service Begins

Queens commuters have one new option for getting to work in Manhattan, now that high-speed ferry service has started between Long Island City and East 34th Street and Wall Streets Pier 11.
NY Waterway service from the Hunters Point ferry dock at 2nd Street and Borden Avenue began September 3 and features a five-minute trip to East 34th Street and an eight-minute trip to Wall Street. The service runs weekdays between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.; ferries depart every 15 minutes during morning and evening rush hours, and every 30 minutes during off-peak times. Service is free for the first week, after which one-way fares will be $5 to Wall Street and $3 to 34th Street. Monthly passes are available for $150 and $80, respectively.
Commuters can park their cars at the ferry terminal for $4 a day or $60 a month. Service to the Long Island Rail Roads Long Island City station will increase, and a shuttle bus will carry commuters from the Hunters Point and Long Island City LIRR stations to the ferry terminal.
Five of the six ferries that will make the trips between Queens and Manhattan were named to honor September 11 victims. The Father Mychal Judge was named for the Fire Department chaplain who was the first recorded fatality on September 11. The Moira Smith was named for the only female police officer to die on that day, and the Fred V. Morrone honors the Port Authority police superintendent who perished in the World Trade Center. The Douglas Gurian was named for a commuter who never returned. The Austin Tobin was named for the one-time Port Authority executive director who championed the construction of the Twin Towers. The Enduring Freedom, another ferry boat, was christened on Tuesday.
