Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria) is urging Queens residents to take a simple blood test to determine if their bone marrow could save the life of a 2-year-old Astoria boy stricken with a rare blood disease.
Dakota Kwiecinski suffers from hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a disease similar to leukemia, and will likely die if he does not receive a bone marrow transplant. The situation is further complicated by the boy's unusual ethnic mix of Caucasian and native American.
“The test takes minutes and is a simple blood test,” Vallone said. “Please come out and help this wonderful little boy.”
A bone marrow drive will be held Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. at the 25th annual Thunderbird American Indian Mid-Summer Pow Wow at the Queens County Farm Museum. The museum is at 73-50 Little Neck Parkway in Floral Park.
