There are many things I feel that are wrong in our society, but the one that has confronted me lately is the double standard that exists between girls and boys in the dating field.
Why is it that guys can be with as many girls as possible and be considered a player and when a girl is even seen with different guys, she is automatically called a slut?
I don't know where this stereotype derived from, but I think it should be relinquished right here and now.
What people sometimes don't understand or perhaps don't want to acknowledge is that the intended object of dating is, firstly, to have a good time but also to find the person whom we would want to spend the rest of our lives with. And in order to find the right person we must experience the company, companionship, and intimacy of different people. By doing so we can rule out what we don't want and discover what we are looking for in future relationships.
Oddly enough, girls are just as guilty as guys of feeding into this double standard between the genders. But don't get me wrong — there is a difference between a girl who just wants to explore her options and a slut but, unfortunately, the line is very thin. And the same goes for the guys.
It's just a shame in this day and age where women have grown so independent and play such important roles in society that we are still put down for acting on our instinct and drive.
Christina Aguilera's new song “Can't Hold Us Down” is one of many attempts by artists in the entertainment industry to put an end to this stereotype. One line goes: “If you look back in history, it's a common double standard of society, the guy gets all the glory the more he can score, while the girl can do the same and yet you call her a whore.”
So, the bottom line is that if we were all created equal, we should all be treated equal. Next time you hear rumors about a girl who has been labeled a slut, please step back and see the picture for what it's really worth.
