McSweeney's family could not be reached for comment, but news reports said she had successfully battled breast cancer discovered more than two years ago. At the time of her death, she was headed to mass with her mother, who lives in the Bronx, reports said.
Police said her 87-year-old passenger, later identified as her mother was taken by ambulance to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx and treated for minor injuries.
Officers discovered McSweeney's car after responding to a cell phone call from a driver reporting that several males were throwing debris from the Palmer Road overpass, police said. The piece of asphalt that killed McSweeney was thrown or dropped from the overpass, police said.
After McSweeney was hit, the Oldsmobile struck a steel barrier before coming to a stop in nearby bushes, the Daily News reported.
An only child who grew up in the Bronx, McSweeney made frequent visits to her mother's home. Her father died in August, according to the News.
Detectives suspect other drivers may have seen the debris throwers, police said, and anyone with information was asked to call 914-377-7725.
McSweeney worked as an administrative aide at the drug company Pfizer Inc., based in Manhattan, news reports said. In addition to her mother, McSweeney is survived by her husband of 12 years, Ty McSweeney, according to news reports.
She was killed on the Sprain Brook less than a week after a tree on the Saw Mill River Parkway in Westchester crashed down on an SUV, killing a young couple whose 6-month-old daughter survived.
A wake for McSweeney was scheduled this week at the McNulty Funeral Home and a funeral mass was planned Thursday at 9:45 a.m. at St. Theresa's Church on 2855 St. Theresa Ave. in the Bronx.
