Rev. Floyd Flake, former United States Congressman and esteemed community leader, is set to join Marcia Keizs, president of York College, as a consultant to improve community relations and foster an improved educational environment at York College.
Rev. Flake, senior pastor of the Greater Allen A. M. E. Cathedral in Jamaica, the largest church in New York State, will work with Keizs to develop a strong partnership between the communities of Southeast Queens and the faculty and students at York College. “It’s all about the community,” says Flake. “I want to assist York College in whatever way I can to rise to a level that is competitive with other four year colleges.”
Flake has spent his career influencing public policy and uniting communities through civic action and duty. He has served on the President’s Commission of Excellence in Special Education; the Fannie Mae Foundation, The Princeton Review, the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and many other community boards and affiliations. He is a columnist for the New York Post, authored a best selling book, “The Way of the Bootstrapper: Nine Action Steps for Achieving Your Dreams,” and co-authored with his wife Elaine, “Practical Virtues: Everyday Values and Devotions for African American Families.” His reputation for encouraging strong leadership and promoting productive policy change precedes him.
Keizs has sought to involve the community in prioritizing the educational goals of York College and increase the educational prosperity of the college since her appointment as president this past February. “This will reinvigorate York College’s outreach,” says Keizs. “I see it both fast-tracking and strengthening our relations as we identify our strategic initiatives and partner with businesses and civic organizations.” Keizs is seeking to involve the community in improving student enrollment and retention.
