Making A Difference:Rene Goldschmidt Volunteering For 34 Years

In a national proclamation, President George W. Bush said, “Citizen service has always been a cornerstone of our democracy. Since our founding, Americans have stepped forward to serve the needs of others, strengthen our communities, and defend the freedoms we treasure.”
And so, in honor of her years of service and volunteerism, The Queens Courier would like to recognize Rene Goldschmidt.
Goldschmidt, who has always been an avid volunteer and activist, has devoted her time, efforts and energy to the residents at the Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past 34 years. Currently, she runs a plant club, through which she employs horticultural therapy to help the seniors enjoy recreation and fun.
“She’s been with us for 34 years — it’s unbelievable,” said Linda Spiegel, Director of Public Affairs for Margaret Tietz. “She really adds a special touch to Margaret Tietz.”
The club meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for one hour. Each resident plants cuttings and tends to the greenery, carefully monitoring its growth. After two months, the plants are sold. And according to Goldschmidt, the seniors really look forward to their club time.
“It’s a good day for me — for all of us — we all look forward to it,” said Goldschmidt.
Although Goldschmidt is not a licensed therapist, she does feel that her efforts are both rewarded and rewarding.
“It’s something they [the residents] really enjoy,” said Goldschmidt. “They like to see things grow, and I feel like it’s a bonding experience for all of us.”
Prior to her work at Margaret Tietz, Goldschmidt worked with Pre-K children as well as special education students.
At 85 years old, Goldschmidt has no intentions of slowing down.
“I think it’s important to give something back,” she said. “It’s good to work with people who really appreciate it. It gives you a good feeling to see the smiles on their faces. The fact that they can do something creative, use their hands to create something, is great.”
