NYIT HONORS MARCIA SINGER-Associate Dean of Students feted for 38 years of service

For the last 38 years, Floral Park resident Marcia Singer has dedicated her life to the New York Institute of Technology and its students, earning her the first ever Trustee’s Award.
Singer, who first went to work for NYIT in 1968, is currently the Associate Dean of Students. During her years of service to the school, she has been the advisor to clubs such as the Women’s Association, Muslim Student Association, Jewish Student Association, Student Talent Union and Phi Beta Alpha. She also played a role in creating NYIT’s first honor society, Phi Eta Sigma, in 1971.
During the May 5 luncheon held in her honor, current students, former students, faculty, family and friends gathered to recognize the contribution Singer has made to NYIT.
“Despite the world changing, Marcia has not changed,” said Richard Torrenzano, a former student and current member of the Board of Directors. “Each day she has come to campus to help students.”
Upon accepting the award, Singer pointed out that the luncheon was not a retirement party and said that she plans on continuing serving the New York Institute of Technology community.
“Working at NYIT for the past 38 years has been a wonderful experience,” Singer said. “The students, the faculty (and) the staff have truly given my life a purpose. I consider myself to be very lucky to be a part of NYIT.”
Georgia Koufakis, who has been friends with Singer for six years and considers her to be like a sister, said that she was “delighted” to see Singer recognized.
“She’s very easy to work with, very friendly and she’s so great with the students,” she said.
Singer’s three children, Lady Barbara Thomas Judge, Nancy Singer and Michael Singer, also spoke about the important connection that NYIT and Singer had.
“It’s really wonderful to see how many people love my mother,” said Judge. “It’s really nice to meet all the people that she loves and see how much they love her back and to see what an impact she has made.”
