Stock up on storm necessities now

State Senator Frank Padavan is urging all Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck and Flushing residents to be prepared for hurricane season. He is joining forces with community supermarkets encouraging residents to equip their homes for the next storm.
Padavan has enlisted the help of Waldbaum's, C-Town and Bravo to distribute the free brochures, entitled &#8220Get Ready,” to help residents put together their own disaster preparedness kit. &#8220Get Ready” can also be obtained by calling 718-343-0255. Additional information, including a detailed list of items that should be included in a disaster preparedness kit is also available on his website www.frankpadavan.com.
&#8220With the help of supermarket owners, without which this project wouldn't be possible, I'm hopeful that we can help our residents to better prepare themselves in case of a hurricane,” Padavan said. &#8220After Hurricane Katrina ravaged the southern part of the country last year, we all must be a little more cautious and keeping a hurricane preparedness kit is a great way to start.”
The list breaks down disaster necessities into categories such as household, baby and children's needs, documentation and other general items to keep handy during hurricane season.
The northeast has not really experienced a significant hurricane since Hurricane Gloria hit Long Island in 1985. It was a category two storm with winds of 85mph. Weather experts believe we are due for another hurricane in the foreseeable future.
