YMCA names new gymnastics director

The Flushing YMCA's gymnastics program may be back on track soon after weeks of uncertainty following the unexpected departure of the previous program director.
The Flushing YMCA announced the postponement of the fall session of their progressive gymnastics program, which was slated to run from September 11-November 5, after longtime program director Damon Albert left the operation on September 7.
The YMCA, which trains approximately 600 athletes in the program, immediately began looking for a replacement for Albert, directing program members to the YMCA facility in Bellerose.
Vice President of Operations Linda Allocco said that William White has been named Interim Gymnastics Program Director.
&#8220White was previously the Boys Program Coordinator and Instructor and has been a member of the gymnastics program staff since 1988,” Kevin Shermach, Senior Executive Director of Marketing & Communications for the YMCA of Greater New York, said.
But before the program will be able to continue, the owner of the building where the program is housed, the Flushing Armory, will have to take several steps regarding the safety of the facility. According to a statement from Shermach, this is the result of a risk management audit, facility accreditation evaluation and equipment safety assessment.
&#8220The YMCA is committed to putting the program back in operation as soon as possible and has begun taking steps to rapidly move the program to the gym at the Flushing YMCA,” Shermach said.  &#8220Preparations include moving and installing equipment and adapting and rescheduling current branch programs and operations to accommodate the gymnastics program.”
