Learn to Tango at Flushing Town Hall

The Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts will literally kick off its Latin Influences program with a lesson in Tango dancing followed by a performance of TANGO!, both given by Maria &#8220Mayte” Vicens.
In partnership with the Aaron Copland School of Music, Vicens will be accompanied by a musical ensemble of Michael Mossman, Michael Lipsey and Antonio Hart on Saturday, October 28. This event is the first in a month-long celebration of Latin American and Spanish cultures through music, drama, dance and visual arts. The lesson will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the concert set to start at 8 p.m.
For further information call the box office at 718-463-7700, Ext. 222 or visit www.flushingtownhall.org. Tickets are $25 for non-members, $15 for members, while the cost of the lesson is $10 non-members, $8 members, FREE with ticket to TANGO!
Also included in the Latin Influences program is an exhibition of art created in the pre-Hispanic Mexican Indian tradition, &#8220Recuerdos – Celebrating the Day of the Dead” curated by Louise Weinberg.
This exhibition runs from October 31 through December 2 and includes works from local Queens artists Kim Babcock of Astoria, Mary Teresa Giancoli of Sunnyside as well as Long Island City residents Arthur Hammer, Eliot Lable, Louise Weinberg and Irene Young.
Works from contemporary artists such as Silvia Capistran, Sal Garcia, Ester Hernandez, Juana Alicia Montoya, Artemio Rodriguez, Nancy Weinberg, and Kreg Yingst who are working as far afield as Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; Chicago, IL; and Pensacola, FL, are included.
New York artists Sylvia Hernandez from Brooklyn and Judy Sidonie Tillinger of Manhattan have works that are displayed too.
On Sunday, November 26 curator Louise Weinberg will give a talk on the works and lead a guided tour of the exhibition. Weinberg's talk is free and open to the public.
Both events will take place at Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Boulevard, in Flushing. Town Hall is easily accessible from the No. 7 subway and has free parking available.
