Pauline Leblond, Community Activist

Pauline Leblond passed away. A resident of Ridgewood, she was 88 years old.
Leblond, a community activist, was a retired teacher, linguist, published poet and educator. She spoke five languages.
The daughter of Italian immigrants, Leblond received a New York State Regents Scholarship from Bushwick High School, making it possible for her to graduate from Brooklyn College with a BA in Romance Languages during the height of the Great Depression.
She served as Assistant Director in the Office of War Information during World War II, and later taught at St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School for 15 years.
According to Senator Serphin Maltese, who named Leblond a Senate Woman of Distinction in 2001, &#8220I've known her for many years. She was quite a lady.”
Most recently, she taught English as a Second Language on a volunteer basis.
Leblond is best known, however, for her tenure as president of the Stockholm Street Block Association, during which time the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission declared the block a landmark.
Over the years, she received more than 15 awards, distinctions and proclamations.
