Politicians shocked as elections loom

As details continue to emerge from the indictments surrounding Queens Assemblymember Brian McLaughlin, local politicians have reacted with shock and surprise.
&#8220I almost can't believe what I'm reading,” Borough President Helen Marshall told The Queens Courier. &#8220When all is said and done, I hope it all works out for Brian. This is so contrary to the Brian we all know and love.”
Congressmember Joseph Crowley, who is the new head of the Queens Democratic Organization praised McLaughlin for his work throughout the years, but pointed out the severity of the allegations.
&#8220These charges are very serious, and I view this matter as an issue that must be settled under the highest authority of the law and the courts,” he said in a statement. &#8220Brian devoted his lifetime to public service – from his career as union leader to serving in New York's City Council, and also worked to help improve the lives of ordinary people. For him to commit such wrongdoings that undermine his trust with the public is deeply regrettable.”
City Councilmember Joseph Addabbo, who is the chairperson of the council's labor and civil service committee, said that he always enjoyed the time he spent working with McLaughlin.
&#8220In my professional dealings with Brian, I have always found him to be professional and helpful with labor issues,” said Addabbo. &#8220I did believe he felt the plight of the workers.”
With the midterm elections only a few weeks away, the blockbuster indictment of McLaughlin, the allegations levied by the ethics committee saying New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi broke the law and the alleged inappropriate misconduct of Florida Congressmember Mark Foley with his pages, some politicians are wary the incidents could affect voter turnout.
&#8220The voter sometimes gets frustrated by the people they elect, and sometimes it may transcend to the voting booths,” Addabbo said. &#8220It's unfortunate that the few [corrupt politicians] ruin it for the many [good ones].”
