The newly formed Department of Sanitation New York (DSNY) football team outlasted their first opposition - the Washington, D.C. Police and Fire Department team, the Generals - in an overtime win, 14-8.
“I’m very proud of the whole department that was involved,” the team’s new President Pat McCutchen raved after the match, held at Bayside High School. After ending the first half-ahead 8-0, the D.C. team came out and tied the score, but the Strongest fought back for a win.
“We have some hitters that’s for sure,” McCutchen said of the team’s bruising style of play on Saturday, April 14.
After the game, the Sanitation team showed the D.C. players around Bayside.
“Fifty percent is the game, and 50 percent is hosting the other team and making new friends and camaraderie,” McCutchen explained.
Last year, Whitestone native McCutchen, along with several other Sanitation employees, decided to form their own team.
“We just wanted to be more competitive,” McCutchen said. “We used to get crushed.”
Since then, the former team folded, and the new group is now gearing up to play the New York Police Department (NYPD) team in June. The DSNY team also is scheduling matches against several semi-pro football teams.
“When we host them, I want them to say, ‘What do these guys do?’”
We are not just the saying, ‘garbage men.’ We deal with many things in our line of work. When the city needs us, we are there,” McCutchen said.
