Seeing a need in his community for more services, Mitchell Hauser decided he should open a business that would be useful to his neighbors. After two years of working towards that goal, he recently opened Court Square Wine & Spirits in Long Island City.
Hauser, a resident of Long Island City since 1989, said that before the store opened, the closest place for his neighbors to go was Astoria. Now, through the newly opened store, community members can get a “Manhattan style variety with Queens prices.”
“Doing this in our neighborhood is important,” Hauser said. “It’s important for me to help the neighborhood grow.”
The store, which has been doing business since April 1 and had its grand opening on Friday, April 27, currently boasts the most square footage of any liquor store in Queens. It sells 450 varieties of wine and all major brands of spirits. Hauser also pointed out that they represent many different countries, reflecting the diversity of the borough.
“We want to give customers what they want but we also want to challenge them to try something new,” said Hauser, who said his business motto is “top selections for smart prices.” “They’ll be able to find an exciting selection of wines that are both popular as well as rare and coveted by wine enthusiasts.”
Another feature of the store are wine tastings every Thursday and Friday in order to introduce customers to new kinds and help them further their knowledge of wines.
Hauser said that he hopes to see Court Square Wine & Spirits become a destination wine and liquor store for the community as well as for the borough as a whole.
